May the Fourth Be With You!

Yes, it's that time again! Fandom Squee has arrived, and as any self-respecting Star Wars fan might expect, what better to start on this day, of all days?

I'm kicking us off, and I'm going with Quotes. There are so many quotes relating to Star Wars, that you may even use some and not realise the significance, if you have somehow been hiding under a rock somewhere all these years and never seen anything of any shape or description relating to the epic piece of pop culture that is Star Wars...

SW-May the 4th

I saw the original three Star Wars movies when they came out. I'm showing my age here, but I'm even going to admit I was a teenager when 'A New Hope', or as we called it then, 'Star Wars', came out. I adored it from the first viewing, and even now get a kick out of it any time I see it. I enjoyed 'The Empire Strikes Back' too, although slightly to a lesser degree initially, and then thrilled back in force (no pun!) when 'Return of the Jedi' hit the big screen. It was then that I knew it was one of the most magnificent trilogies ever, at least up to that point!

I did look forward to the second trilogy's coming, but I will admit it never grabbed me in quite the same way, although I still enjoyed returning to the same universe and seeing some old familiar characters and a bunch of new ones too. I'm intrigued to see if the last trilogy ever gets made for the same reasons, but I don't hold out any great hopes for it being anywhere near as wonderful as I remember the first three films being on my consciousness. Maybe that's just old age; maybe it's the thrill of something new being hard to replace, I don't know, but I am still curious enough that I'd go see them...

Anyway, what we're here for today is THE QUOTES! Now, these are not in any particular order, but I did grab them from someone's top one hundred list and adapt it a little to my own personal favourites. I'm giving you fifty quotes today:

1. "May the Force be with you."
2. "Well, you said you wanted to be around when I made a mistake." "I take it back!"
3. "You do have your moments. Not many, but you have them."
4. "I love you." "I know."
5. "I’m not afraid." "You will be."
6. "I have a bad feeling about this."
7. "Who’s the more foolish; the fool, or the fool who follows him?"
8. "That’s no moon."
9. "Laugh it up, fuzzball!"
10. "Would somebody get this big walking carpet out of my way?!"
11. "Search your feelings."
12. "I’ll never join you."
13. "He certainly has courage."
14. "Only at the end do you realize the power of the Dark Side."
15. "It's a trap."
16. "But how could they be jamming us if they don’t know… that we’re… coming?"
17. "Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you could possibly imagine."
18. "Stay on target."
19. "You know, that little droid is going to cause me a lot of trouble." "Oh, he excels at that, sir."
20. "Shut him up or shut him down."
21. "Give yourself to the Dark Side."
22. "I find your lack of faith disturbing."
23. "Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh… everything’s perfectly all right now. We’re fine. We’re all fine here now, thank you." (Winces.) "Uh, how are you?"
24. "Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking Nerf herder."
25. "And I thought they smelled bad on the outside."
26. "Would it help if I got out and pushed?!!" "It might!"
27. "Try not. Do… or do not. There is no try."
28. "All too easy."
29. "How you doin’, Chewbecca? Still hanging around with this loser?"
30. "I assure you, Lord Vader. My men are working as fast as they can." "Perhaps I can find new ways to motivate them."
31. "You’ll find I’m full of surprises!"
32. "Yeah… you’re a real hero."
33. "A Jedi Knight? Jeez, I’m out of it for a little while, everyone gets delusions of grandeur!"
34. "Keep your distance, Chewie, but don’t, y’know, look like you’re keeping your distance." (Grumbled questioning bark.) "I don’t know. Fly casual."
35. "What have you done?! I’m BACKWARDS."
36. "You will find that it is you who are mistaken… about a great many things."
37. "It’s against my programming to impersonate a deity."
38. "These aren’t the droids you’re looking for."
39. "Aren’t you a little short for a Stormtrooper?"
40. "This is some rescue!"
41. "Travelling through hyperspace ain’t like dustin’ crops, boy!"
42. "They’re getting closer." "Oh yeah? Watch this." (Long pause — the engine sputters and dies.)
43. "Great, kid. Don’t get cocky."
44. "R2-D2, you know better than to trust a strange computer!"
45. "So, what do you think? You think a princess and a guy like me…"
46. "I’ve just made a deal that will keep the Empire out of here forever."
47. "I have you now!"
48. "Never tell me the odds!"
49. "Told you I did. Reckless is he. Now, matters are worse."
50. "That boy is our last hope." "No. There is another."

In order to make this fandom squee a little more fun, I offer up a reward to anyone who can use one (or more) of the quotes in this post to write their own ficlet or make one or more of their own icons, or a banner. The main rule is that it should be posted by May 11th (as that's when we end the squee for this fandom). It does NOT have to be in the Star Wars universe (unless you want it to be, of course), so if it's Booth and Bones reminiscing over the first time they watched a Star Wars movie together (would they even do that? I don't know!) or Steve and Danny arguing over whether Luke or Han was the hero of the first movie... or a graphic of Sheldon and Leonard with light sabres, or any other situation at all, grab a quote from this post and go for it!

And as a special little challenge to myself, for anyone who manages something over 200 words, your reward will be an icon representing the quote you use (or one of them, if you use multiple quotes), in whatever fandom you write about. If you create some icons or a banner, I offer you a Star Wars themed drabble to go with your graphic/s - although bear with me if it's not a fandom I know; I may have to swap that out if so.

And for anyone who wants to, this post is also for telling us about your own favourite quote and/or a RL story to go with it, if you have one! ;-)

Welcome to the dark side... :D

I got a Star Wars t-shirt for my seventh birthday, and when it came out my dad took me to the drive-in to see it. We went on to see the other two as well, so Star Wars is one of my favorite childhood memories.

I am a purist when it comes to the movies. I don't care for all the extras that Lucas snuck in as he re-released them, although Han stepping on Jabba's tail is pretty amusing.

I've seen the prequels and they are alright, but knowing what was going to happen made them a little boring. Of them, I like Attack of the Clones best because Yoda is a fast, little f*&ker. And, Sam Jackson as a Jedi was pretty cool.

I'll have to think on which quote I want to use, but I'm certain the muse can come up with a ficlet.

Oh, so many great memories, eh?

Yeah, there's something about the originals in their pure form, right?

I found the prequels just a little long and boring too, in all honesty.

Yay - I look forward to seeing what you can manage with a quote or two. ;-)

The three original movies for me all the way! Return of the Jedi was my favorite and is still my favorite and is probably the one that I've watched the most. What can I say I'm a Luke girl :-) I was fangirling Mark Hamill before I even knew what it meant to be a fangirl.

Is it bad that as I'm reading the quotes I knew who said them and what movie they are from ;-)

Wonderful! Another young heart for Luke Skywalker! ;-)

It's not bad; it's very good! You obviously know your Star Wars!;-)

I just rewatched all three original movies!! I've probably seen them a thousand times - no lie.

I too am old enough to have seen them the first time in the movie theater. I couldn't believe my eyes. What wonder was this?

To this day, the first three Star Wars are my favorite movies. They are my go-to when I need to be cheered up, need some "me time," need the comfort of the familiar.

I refuse to recognize those prequels. They were a mess. Didn't like them at all. Won't rewatch them. I'd like to be excited for the next three sequels but no way do I trust JJ Abrams not to screw them up. He managed to ruin the second Star Trek movie. I feel pretty sure he'll ruin the Star Wars sequels too.

Suffice to say, I too can identify which movie each quote came from, who said it, and why.

One of my personal favorites - "We were made to suffer. It seems to be our lot in life." It comes in handy when life seems to be conspiring against you!

Most importantly - May the Force Be With You!!

Thanks for sharing with us! It's good to know I'm not the only one who saw them back in the day. ;-)

I'm well amazed by how well and how many times people know and have seen them! I Love them, but I'd say my viewing is around the 5-10 views (varying, depending which movie) so I can't say I know the whos and wheres of all the quotes in every case, but I do know a fair few. ;-)

May the Force Be With You too! :D

My favorite line actually came out of Episode Two, of all places... when Obi-Wan is in the archive and the little old lady tells him - straight-face serious - that "if it isn't in the archives, it doesn't exist."

This is entirely based on the fact that I was six months away from graduating college with a degree in archives and museums.

Sawyer's nicknames just sprang to mind here, I'm thinking of the way he used to call Jin Chewy, maybe I could do something with that!

Oh, I bet you could! I look forward to seeing it. ;-)

Love those gifs! Glad to see you started young! What's not to love about them, right? ;-)

Uhh I don't know how to write anything under 200 words lol, 600 words is my minimum usually. Is there a word limit here.

I am looking at Hawaii Five-0 with numbers 2,3,4,13, possibly 15, 22, 23, 26,31, 32, 40 and 49. Uhhh how long again can this story be, ooppps
May. 5th, 2014 07:56 am (UTC)
There is absolutely NO MINIMUM or MAXIMUM on this, but I just picked 200 out of the air to make rewards for, or I could be here all day!

So go for it; make the story as long or as short as you like! I'm sure it will be a lot of fun. ;-)

An awesome quote to start with!

And welcome! It's lovely to have you on board, especially with the smiling kitty icon! ;-)

I can't claim to be a fan, but I do really like these movies. Helps because my husband is a HUGE fan. Quite a few years ago, he bought me a shirt from the M&M Store with Red dressed as a Stormtrooper with that quote on it: "Aren't you a little short for a stormtrooper?" Got me a free coffee at Starbucks one day. LOLOL

But seriously, whether you're a fan or not, it's something that has pervaded our culture and made itself at home. That's how you know something has had an impact.
May. 5th, 2014 07:59 am (UTC)
Oh it sounds like you're fan enough! I wouldn't say I'm THAT knowledgeable about them in the in depth way some people are, but I love 'em!

I'm sorry I'm not sure who Red is, but that does sound like a great way to get a free coffee!!!

That's so very true about how it's pervaded the culture - and to think the distributors never thought it would do much... ;-)

I think I will come back this week and pick a quote to write to! Excellent idea, and very nice job with the squee, thank you!

Ahhh.... Star Wars: I walked into the theater to see it as a 14-year-old with few expectations -- and when I walked back out, it was like the whole world had changed on me. Not exaggerating, it made that big an impression. The feelings that I got from it about what might be out there in the universe, the feelings I got about the potential that story-telling holds.... it really was like my feet weren't touching the ground.

I instinctively never watched the second three movies - knew they couldn't hold a candle. But I'm hopeful about the ones to come, and I'm looking forward to them.
May. 5th, 2014 08:02 am (UTC)
Wonderful! I really look forward to seeing what you come up with! ;-)

So we're about the same age! It was one of the most powerful SF-type movies to me too at that time, and firmly cemented my interest in all such movies from there on in.

I have watched the other movies, but really didn't have the same feeling that I still get even now by watching one of the first three! ;-)

Our high school English teacher took us on a field trip to the movie theater across the street when it first opened up! I think she just wanted to see it herself, but she did take advantage and use it as a teachable moment. How is good/evil portrayed in movies by use of names, color, etc. Luke and Leia wore white/light colored clothing, Han wore a combination of black and white (he was conflicted and complex), Darth Vader was all in black. We had a little trouble with the concept of storm troopers in white and the fact that the Death Star was squeaky clean inside, while the Falcon looked well-worn. I guess evil is well-funded!

I loved the original three; the prequels, not as much. The sparkle between Han & Leia, the Falcon's personality just wasn't matched in the adolescent relationship between Anakin and Padme. They kept talking about love, whereas Han spoke very little and simply showed Leia.

Still, I have all six on Blu Ray.

Oh... and Han shot first, no doubt! It was necessary to show his growth as a character... he was in a shoot first or die situation, what do you think he'd do?!?
May. 10th, 2014 02:25 am (UTC)
It was great that your teacher took that moment (when she wanted to see the movie herself!) and made it one of teaching - I'd never thought about all the colours and such, but some of it does make a lot of sense!

Yep, I'm an original girl myself, so I totally get that - I have yet to rewatch any of the prequels, but I've seen the originals countless times in all their forms!

I must be one of the few people who wasn't a big enough fan to even question who shot first! Slack or what? ;-)
