Thursday Tropes: Passion is Evil (or is it?) ...and questions that Must Be Asked!

ThursdayTropes

Happy Friday or Pre-Friday depending on your locale! I am a failure at posting this early again - but I will get my trope act together next week. Meantime, I've found two for you that sound like so much fun I'm tempted to try them myself....

Passion is Evil
When good and evil collide (or at least chase each other around) evil is often portrayed as passionate and good as cool, rational, calm. Write a fic, porny or not, that plays that dynamic up times five. Or flip it around, and write a fic where evil is cool and calculating until the moment good has it locked up or pinned down. ;)

Some possibilities, to spur your own ideas maybe:

  • Spock’s Pon Farr doesn’t go quite the way he’d pictured it…

  • Um… this isn’t how Princess Leia and Han Solo hooked up in the movie…

  • Mary thinks Moriarity looks delicious cuffed to their headboard

Obviously Han wasn't evil, just devilish - but the trope certainly works just as well with pure hearted characters and scamps as with heroes/villains

Audience Surrogate
There’s more than one type of Audience Surrogate roaming around Fic World. Perhaps the most fun of them: The guy/girl who gets to ask the questions. Hurley quizzes Jack or Sawyer, Charlie is the lucky girl who gets to ask Dean and Sam ‘WTF,’  and Arthur Dent asks anyone who’ll listen about absolutely everything but never really figures it out until he meets Fenchurch and she points the way to the actual answer.

For this Thursday Trope, either:

  • Write a fic from the perspective of one of your favorite audience surrogate characters. Put them in some new crisis or write about one that didn’t fully play out on screen and bring it to life.

  • Create an audience surrogate, drop them into a favorite world, and have them ask away – maybe what they ask makes one of our fandom loves squirm with self-recognition, or see a situation very differently. Think couples therapy or forced psych evaluation, or civilian ride-along learning about police practices for a day or.....

  • Have your story start with the surrogate character dropping a verbal bomb on your hero(es) and walking off, never to be seen or heard from again. Do they: (a) Deal with it?  (b) Deny it loudly?  (c) Pretend they never heard it? So many possibilities....

Well, hope it stirs some thoughts and maybe spins some words for you!  Have a great weekend!
