Bring on the Neon!

Okay, I'm going to date myself by saying the music of the 80's are what formed what can be considered my very unusual tastes in music.

Or, if you're my husband, you can tell me I have no taste, but I digress.  Hah.

It was a time of experimental music, crossovers galore, and some of the weirdest lyrics ever heard.

I wish I was in Tijuana eating barbecued iguana.

Everyone's a super hero, everyone's a Captain Kirk

I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine

Five bonus points to anyone who can name the songs those lyrics belong to.  Lyrics, by the way, that I sadly did not have to Google.  Um, thank you, Spotify?

In addition to oddball music, we were gifted with some amazing talent:

Bryan Adams

Hall & Oats

Billy Joel

And some of these fabulous songs:

"Safety Dance" - Men Without Hats

"Break My Stride" - Matthew Wilder

"Video Killed the Radio Star" - The Buggles

And an honorary mention - "Bad Boys" by Wham!  A song I never even knew existed until my kid took a History of Pop Music class this year.  She's officially a George Michael fan.  Gotta say, she's definitely my kid.  :D

I get my kicks above the waistline, sunshine...One Night in Bangkok from the musical Chess...performed by Murray Head...older brother of Anthony Stewart Head (aka, Giles from Buffy :D )

I did not know that last bit of information! Interesting. :D

Think I'm going to be listing to 80's on 8 on my ride home tonight.

Big Murray fan, so that's why I know ;)
It's interesting to me that both are actors and musicians...though Murray has had a bigger musical career than acting, and Anthony's had a bigger acting career than musical.

It's fun to see how those kinds of interests run in families, too.

I can't *believe* I didn't recognize one of the lyrics to Mexican Radio. That's....how long it's been. Ha. The other two came to mind much more immediately, but I won't ruin it for anyone else...

The 80s absolutely had some of the craziest music. Maybe everyone was trying to break out of the mold at the same time? And make something interesting enough for a music video, while they were at it. IDK....but those were some nutty times, for sure.

Hah, it's been a minute for that song so I'll let it slide. :D But it's one of those wacky songs that I love.

Indeed they were nutty! But I'm glad I was growing up then as opposed to now. Not sure I'd ever graduate with internet access and the like. Crazy to see how music has evolved since then, too.

99 Luftballoons -- can't stand that song, personally.

One Night in Bangkok -- one of my all time favourites!!!

Daryl Hall and John Oates -- one of my all time favourite groups!

Aw, I love that song! But then, I admit to having questionable tastes.

Yeah, mine too!

You and my husband! But I did enjoy them a lot growing up. :)

Far as I'm concerned, it's just constantly amazing at how different we are as people.... I don't like the song because the lyrics gave me nightmares for years.

My favourite song of all time is the Spinners' "I'll Be Around". Imagine my shocked joy when Daryl Hall and John Oates covered it.... :D

Exactly, and I'll never hate on someone for their taste in music. But I can totally understand that - especially since the song came out during the height of the Cold War.

That's definitely not something I'd expect them to cover. Had to have been a double bonus that day. :)

Know the songs, but can't name them...lol

"Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voodoo, "99 Luftballons" by Nena, and "One Night in Bangkok" by Murray Head. I went for some of my odder favorites. :D

Picked my younger kid up from her friend's house on my way home from work today and she says, "Sorry, Mom, but this song has been stuck in my head all day." I'm like... okay... and then "Rio" starts playing and I cracked up.

Memory is a seive most days.

Rio was definitely an earworm of a song...lol

You and me both most days. The things I can remember aren't ever the things I need to remember. Like, I can count to ten in five languages but can't remember which foreman I spoke to two minutes ago. LOL

Yes, it was. Funny how good it sounded after so many years though.

I can count to ten in three, but can't remember where I put the broom and dustpan at work. Ugh. It's stress of dealing with stupid people I tell you.

I think most Duran Duran songs have aged well.

I can't remember where I put the broom at home and it's been in the same place for 19 years, so I feel ya. Hah, I have no doubt you're right on that last part.

True! I wasn't much of a fan in the 80's but have grown to appreciate them as I've gotten older. :)

I did not recognise the second line, but we had the German version in NZ so I guess its hardly surprising!  I love the 80s - it's when I started going to concerts in earnest so not surprising either I guess!  Plus I was buying a ton of vinyl!  What I paid $8 for back then is now selling for $30+, which seems incredible somehow, even though it's probably cheaper in today's values!

We had the German version as well and it actually got more airplay from what I can remember. But, my German isn't as good as it once was and I didn't feel like Googling. LOL It was a great time, that's for sure. Sounds like some good memories, too. :)

My college roommates can't hear Bryan Adams without thinking of me. I frequently get random things "Summer of 69 came on the radio, thought of you". And I raise a little eyebrow at that!

Aw, I love that. I have certain songs that make me think of my BFF and the always make me stop and smile. Love those little reminders of people.
