(the last bit of the chapter, last bit for today, catching me up with every word posted thus far ;) Thank you for the boost!)

The sound of Hebenon’s firecorp putting out a grease fire in a private kitchen in someone’s nearby flat only vaguely registered in Ilya’s ears as her door clattered shut behind her. Typically, as part of the city’s protectors, she would have rushed to participate in making sure the fire was out, the family and those in adjoining flats were safe.
But not this time.
Exhausted, she let her gaze sweep across the room noting a life time worth of tiny, intimate details that no one else might see.
The signed dart board her father treasured, left to the family by their champion grandfather, the signature fading as the memory of the man dwindled. The handful of barnacles their mother had given to Ilya when she was a little girl, that the child had memorialized on a star-shaped plaque, their shells chipped and cracked with age. The ceramic plate painted with a sun, moon and stars that none of them had ever seen, which Ginna had made as a gift and that had been deemed too precious by their mother to use for eating…and the tiny flecks of paint peeling from it.
Small bits of a life that had been. A life forever lost.
