Weekend Challenge: Labor Day

Greetings, Campers!

For those in the US, Happy Labor Day Weekend. For all con-goers... BLESS YOU.

I know there's been a lot of quotes going around Weekend Challenges, lately.. but I was at a loss for a good non-quote theme. So, quotes you get. I dug around The Google for some wise words on WORK (so, y'know.. accuracy may vary), and have 76 for you to choose from.

As always, rewards are available in the form of icons, sigatgs (specify your landcomm team, of course) or a quick drabble in a fandom we both share. ((or, if anyone wants to bank words, and wants to volunteer reward words, feel free to let me know!))

Request however many quotes you'd like, between 1-76!

274 words toward an M7 fic - THANK YOU!
“Here.” Vasquez put a hammer and a tape measure on the table top poked the screen of the lap top down a bit.

Faraday eyed the tools as if they might bite him, but he closed the computer then looked up at his new co-worker. “And what is it that you think I’m going to do with those?”

Vasquez rolled his eyes. “Work, actual work.”

Crossing his arms, Joshua sat upright in his chair. “I think I should be offended that you don’t think I’m actually working. Like I’m just watching porn or somethin’.”

“Are you?”

Faraday smiled, smug and ear to ear. “Not just.”

Vasquez rolled his eyes again and added a huff. “There is real work to be done. I need help at the book store. You’re the only one not working.” He started to walk away.

“You know,” Faraday called after the man as he stood and followed. “That is actual work. What I’ve been doing all day. We don’t get this thing funded and we’re dead in the water. It ain’t easy getting people to gamble good money on a project like this. Throwing a coat of paint up s’not gonna get it done. Especially when we’re up against B-“

Vasquez interrupted as he checked his watch and headed into the book store. “It’s after five everywhere. You are done being charming for the day.”

“Exactly, V. We can call it a day-“

“Million dollar dream and a minimum wage work ethic. We need to replace some floor boards. Measure twice and cut once, Guero.” Vasquez pointed to the place where he’d pulled up warped boards and said no more.

it won't let me past the whole bit here...but I fed the plot bunny and managed to sorta work both concepts into this section:

The streets were wet. Any more, the streets were always wet it seemed, a near constant drizzle filling most days and nights, punctuated by the occasional deluge that gushed along the curbed street-sides in search of a drain that was not plugged with coffee cups, paper food wrappers, plastic bags and the other flotsam and jetsam mankind so easily tossed away without thought or care.

They cared about so very little.

Turning the collar of his rain-slick trench coat up to block out the creeping draft his blue and gold tartan scarf failed to prevent, he side-stepped the drunk who staggered into him, a derelict seeking refuge in this particular doorway from the damp but stumbling on when he realized the crevice was already occupied by the stocky bald man in a wide brimmed fedora.

It was not his girth nor presence that was the deterrent, however. He knew this, the way he knew so many things. There were three sorts. Always three sorts. The drunk just happened to be one of them.

With the rain dripping from the brim of his hat, he tilted his head to look up at the dull gray tower of a building across the street, a collective network of rooms housing the poor, the wretched, the downtrodden and persecuted. It was no different, really, then any other on this street, or the streets in the immediate vicinity, men and women penniless and poor of spirit who had nowhere else to go, nothing else to do except scrape and slither through the damp underbelly in effort to live and eke out some measure of play and pleasure

Most, however, rarely rose to greatness, despite their consistent, dogged efforts. Most, caught in the throes of those pursuits, barely survived.

You can never go wrong with quotes, honestly. Or music lyrics.

May I have #9 please? I need to catch up on my challenges here soon. *sigh*

This is a great prompt! And three sentences in I'm already off track and on a superstition kick. *sigh* But words, right?
Aug. 31st, 2018 06:51 pm (UTC)
LMAO. Sorry not sorry? ;)
Aug. 31st, 2018 06:57 pm (UTC)
Never be sorry! I was going to go with luck and work some superstitions in and my research took me down a dark path and now I'm dying over some of these things I'm finding. One of my characters is a Romani born and raised in Romania. I knew the Romani were superstitious, but I had no idea that Romanians were as well.

This is the best though: You should be careful if your nose itches: that means that you might get beaten/slapped.

I may never scratch my nose again. LMAO. THIS PROMPT IS PURE GOLD THANK YOU. One of these days I might actually fill a prompt with something that actually relates to the prompt!
