She wasn’t frightened by the flames. She knew they could not harm her. She had Targaryen blood flowing through her veins. Her brother had claimed to be the dragon. She knew it wasn’t something limited exclusively to the men in her family. She had the strength, she had the will, she couldn’t breathe fire herself, but she could rain down destruction on anyone who warranted it. The flames danced around her. She felt their heat as they burned her clothing to cinders, but they could not burn her. She needed to be here, to welcome her young ones into the world when they arrived.

Eventually the flames died down and she rose from the pyre. Khal Drogo was gone. She was cursed never to have children.

She felt the barest scratching of claws against her hand. Lifting the creature up gently, she looked into the yellow eyes of a baby dragon. This, she thought, this she could have. She stroked his head and delighted when he let out a tiny roar. “Viserion,” she said. Viserys always wanted to be a dragon, so the name suited him. Two other tiny dragons, Drogon and Rhaegal, soon joined them. The fire had worked its magic.

She walked into the flames a childless widow and emerged from the ashes the Mother of Dragons.
