There are times when it comes to him- a flash of memory here or there of times long past and people long dead. He remembers a village, running down well-worn paths, the warmth of the sun on his face as his brother chases him. He remembers his mother, how beautiful she was, her voice soft and comforting. He remembers his father, the woodcutter, going to work as he and his friends played in the forest. He remembers an axe in his own hand and the beautiful sound of leaves and branches crashing into the ground. He remembers being taken, being marked, being changed. A heart that once felt love and happiness turned to ice.

He remembers, but he feels nothing. Winter is coming and, with it, the long night.
