Wonderful World of Wednesday

July is my favorite month. This month's challenge is Pool Party. The Pool Party AO3 Collection is here.

“There are five important things for living a successful and fulfilling life: never stop dreaming, never stop believing, never give up, never stop trying, and never stop learning.”

~Roy Bennett ~

Believe that you can do it and see how far you can go.

May the muse's flame burn deep, bright, and without end as you create.

The King of Cups bit was appropriate for one of my characters in this scene, so I borrowed some of the words to include. It's a short bit of scene between the angel Gabriel (Andy Whitfield in the Gabriel film) and the Stranger in The Passing on the Third Floor Back.
No warnings necessary.

“You should not be here, br…”

The word was begun, even an eternity of question and doubt not enough to erase that truth from his heart, though it faltered on Gabriel’s lips and remained unspoken. Without words, without physical actions, he had prevented anyone from coming to the door, from approaching the Wanderer in the hopes that he would leave.

“You know what I should or should not do, Gabriel?”

The words, spoken in the secret language of the angels, were given without malice or judgment or anger, and yet Gabriel felt immediately chastised, as if God himself had spoken them. He frowned and averted his eyes, though he felt then the eyes of the others turn onto him.

“If you do, I wish you would tell me…that He would tell me. It has been too long since I’ve heard His voice…”

Muttering as much to himself as in reply to a question not raised, Gabriel said, “He has been peculiarly silent of late.” Silent for too long, he sometimes felt, raising unsoothed doubt about himself, his position in heaven, his qualifications and possible failings.

Perhaps Castiel was right. Perhaps God was missing.

Wasn’t it then up to them, those who served, to strive harder to see that His will was accomplished?

But what, Xas often asked, was that will? How were they to know if He would not tell him?

We follow our hearts, Gabriel always replied. We know what is right…and we follow it.

What was right now, however was clouded by uncertainty.

He was taller than Gabriel, thin. Almost gangly. Angular, chiseled. His unassuming tweed suit and battered case gave him an air of kindness, a friendliness not likely to give anyone cause to avoid or fear him. He seemed wise, mature and composed, a worldly-experienced figure with a healer’s aura. He did not look or feel dangerous to Gabriel, though his was a face, with its harp blue eyes, that could adopt a frightening countenance in an instant. Gabriel had never seen it, but he had heard those tales from others who had crossed the Wanderer’s path.

Then again, wasn’t the same true of all angelkind? Alluring and deadly at once?

And wasn’t Lucifer beautiful behold…tempting in his attraction, a lure to draw men in to acts of disobedience?

It was unfair to make that comparison, however, for despite innumerable wild rumors, there was no proof, to Gabriel’s knowledge, that the Wanderer had ever actually hurt anyone. Some had been hurt in his wake, some had suffered, but had that been his doing or the fault of the foolish mortals he mingled with?
