Weekend Challenge: Summer Sing-a-long!

Hi everyone! Our lovely haldoor asked me to host this Weekend's Challenge, so here we are!

And in honor of the (really hot) summer half of the world is having right now, today I have for you a bunch of prompts that are verses from songs containing the word summer somewhere in them. Just let me know how many of them you want, and I will give you a sample of the lyrics and a link to read the full text.

For anyone who writes 200 words or creates a graphic inspired by any of these prompts by 11:59pm Pacific time on Thursday (July 26), I will reward you with your own drabble or graphic in return or words in your honor in one of my many, many WIPs.

So let's make some words this weekend!

Hooray for summer! I'll take two prompts, please.
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:43 am (UTC)
You get Panic at the Disco "When the Day Met the Night"

When the sun found the moon
She was drinking tea in a garden
Under the green umbrella trees
In the middle of summer

Electric Light Orchestra "One Summer Dream"

Deep waters flow, out to the sea,
They never needed you or me.
One summer dream, one summer dream.

Good luck!

Hit me with a good one!
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:44 am (UTC)
You get the Beach Boys "Summer's Gone"

Summer's gone
Summer's gone away
Gone away
With yesterday

Old friends have gone
They've gone their separate ways
Our dreams hold on
For those who still have more to say

Good luck!

I have no idea what writing time I'm going to have this weekend or week (my daughter is visiting and I'll be helping my mom pack for a move) but since I have a thing for collecting prompts...lol, hit me up with one and I'll see what I can do.
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:46 am (UTC)
Awww, well have fun with your family!

You get Selena Gomez "Summer's Not Hot"

It's summer

The heat is blazing like the fourth of July
I got the air con on and its blasting on high
So just grab something cool and jump in your ride
Pick up everybody, I'll be waiting outside

Good luck with the prompt and with finding some time!

yay...I did a thing.

Here's the appropriate snippet from a longer thing. No warnings necessary, and because it is part of my yahoo RP group, it includes Curt Wild from Velvet Goldmine, Gabriel from the film Gabriel (with Andy Whitfield), the stranger from The Passing on the Third Floor Back, and some misc characters:

A purple and black convertible, meaning one of the Wilds pulled down the side drive from the direction of Rose Hall and stopped before reaching the porch steps, its still running engine suggesting that the driver would be leaving shortly. Malcolm, Vitaly and Kai were squeezed into the back seat, but the front passenger seat was empty. Curt leaned on the horn in summons to someone, and then he hopped impatiently out as if not eager to wait for whomever they had come to retrieve. He wore swim trunks and an open buttoned gauzy shirt likely to come off as soon as they reached what appeared likely to be a beach destination. His swift approach abruptly halted as he locked eyes with the visitor.

“Awww…shit…” he said.

Behind him, Kai reached over the seats, cranked on the air conditioner, and pressed the button that raised the convertible roof of the car over Vitaly’s protests of “But it’s not hot!”

“Good morning, Mr. Wild.”

“You know each other?” Gabriel asked.

“Not really…”

“Uh…no…” Curt grunted hastily. He didn’t know the man…but he knew the face, a face Tamara was particularly enamored with though had never cloned. Maybe she finally had, some order placed before her disappearance…or maybe like so many other Tigh Ard residents, the fellow had been drawn here by whatever it was in Tamara that pulled clones, pulled Power, to the House.

For there was definitely Power here. Power very much like…

“Shit,” he muttered again. The great art of speaking was knowing when to stop. In Curt’s case, it should have been knowing when to start. But the words felt stuck, corked behind his befuddlement. Another one. Weren’t there enough in Tigh Ard…in Havensport…already.

But maybe his arrival was a good thing. Maybe it meant…

His exasperated, confused expression lit up hopefully, the cork on his bottled words and emotions popping free, although the stranger’s face had yet to change and the offered hand had yet to drop. Curt clasped the stranger’s fine-boned hand between his, noting both that he had the sort of hands Tamara liked as well as a peculiar sense of ‘rightness’…of security…that engulfed him when their skin made contact.

“Yare here to help bring her home! Yare gonna make this right again! Yare gonna help us fix things!”

It wasn’t a question, and the certainty with which Curt said those words caused Gabriel to wonder that he had not considered that possibility before.

The front door of the house opened and Dhori and Tyler stumbled out, interrupting Curt’s babbling excitement, their arms loaded with a variety of beach gear.

“Come on, guys,” Vitaly called from the car. “They’re waiting!”

“I’ll be right behind,” Tyler promised, already peeling off toward the garage where his truck was parked. Dhori, meanwhile, crammed his armload of supplies into the popped open trunk and then climbed into the passenger seat.

Let's see if this can get my mind off of the 100+ temperature that is pounding Texas.
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:47 am (UTC)
You and me both! I'm dreading this weekend!

You get Brenda Lee "Summer Wind."

The summer wind, came blowin' in
From across the sea
It lingered there, to touch you hair
And walk with me
All summer long, we sang a song
And strolled the golden sand
Two sweethearts, and the summer wind

Good luck with the prompt and with keeping cool!
Jul. 21st, 2018 01:57 am (UTC)
I'd like two please. (Fingers crossed that I finish the challenge this week)
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:48 am (UTC)
You get Judas Priest "Last Rose of Summer"

Throughout the soft and timeless days of August
'Til now the shadows begin to grow much longer
The sunset's fire has deepened blood red
I give you this, the last rose of summer

and Nick Carter "Summer"

Gonna go tubing
Morning after's worth cruising
Gotta get moving
In summer
Flying on a jet-ski
Flirting with the ladies
Well everybody's happy
In summer

Good luck with the writing and the finishing!!

Nick Carter Was Wrong (230 words)
There was a time, maybe about five years ago, maybe a little longer, that I really looked forward to summer. Staying up late, going camping with the boy scouts, swimming, and just being out of school in general, once that weather started to get warm, I was in.

And then I found hockey and summers became something else. While my friends were out cruising, going on float trips, I was in the driveway, shooting a tennis ball against the side of the house with a plastic stick. None of the guys wanted to play with me.

“It’s summer, Cally.”

“Season’s over, bud.”

“Come out to the pool and check out the girls.”

Thwack! The ball hit perfectly inside the chalk circle that I drew for the upper right hand corner of a make-believe net. I lifted the stick above my head in celebration. Inside my mind, the crowd went wild.

There was no sudden press of bodies to celebrate with me, no goaltender cursing at me, no fistbumps or whistles from the bench. It was just me and the oppressive heat.

At the time, it felt worse than a prison. Maybe I should have gone out more, done things with my teammates, met a different girl, and I wouldn’t be in the mess I’m in now.

Or I’d still be in the same mess, but I’d miss the summer too.
Jul. 21st, 2018 03:57 am (UTC)
I'll take one please
Jul. 21st, 2018 04:25 am (UTC)
You get Thomas Rhett "Smooth Like the Summer"

Steal a kiss, act a fool, hop a fence, find a pool
Flying free, like a drink, we're

Smooth like the summer (smooth like the summer)
Smooth like the summer, uh huh
Go on and groove like a mother with your backseat love
We're tearing clothes off each other all night
And keeping it smooth like the summer
Smooth like the summer, uh huh
Smooth like the summer, uh huh

Good luck!

So mad with myself, I had something for last week’s challenge, had it ready to go for Thursday, but then Denis Ten died and I forgot clean about it! 😡

But this week is another week so hit me please! May I have 3 prompts? (It is, after all, the magic number!)
Jul. 21st, 2018 06:25 pm (UTC)
Oh nooooo! That's horrible!!

Your first one is Calvin Harris "Summer"

When I met you in the summer
To my heartbeat sound
We fell in love
As the leaves turned brown

And we could be together baby
As long as skies are blue
You act so innocent now
But you lied so soon
When I met you in the summer

Your second one is Neil Diamond "Summer Love"

Summer love
They call it summer love
But oh, how it feels
And I don't believe make believe
But I was a lonely boy
And you were a lonely girl
And we're together tonight
Summer love made it right

And the third one is Ace of Base "Cruel Summer"

Hot summer streets and the pavements are burning
I sit around
Trying to smile but the air is so heavy and dry
Strange voices are saying (ah, what did they say)
Things I can't understand
It's too close for comfort
This heat has got right out of hand

Good luck!!
Jul. 21st, 2018 12:56 pm (UTC)
Could I have a prompt, please?
Jul. 21st, 2018 06:26 pm (UTC)
Of course!

You get Smash Mouth "Summer Girl"

Summer girl, melting me
Hopelessly drifting out to sea
Let me take you to the old arcade
I got a pocket full of sandy change

Good luck!
Jul. 21st, 2018 08:13 pm (UTC)
3 for me please?
Jul. 21st, 2018 08:27 pm (UTC)
Of course!

The Primitives "Summer Rain"

don't want to go home
don't mind being alone
stay out in summer rain
walk about in summer rain
by myself don't need no other
no need to run for cover

Nat King Cole, "Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer"

Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Those days of soda and pretzels and beer
Roll out those lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer
Dust off the sun and moon and sing a song of cheer

and Willie Nelson "The Great Divide"

Summer sun
No prettier than summer rain
Summer gone
Summer coming back again

Other loves
Lost in the great divide

Good luck!!
Jul. 21st, 2018 09:15 pm (UTC)
Hit me with your best shot! ;) (Just one, please and thank you.)
Jul. 22nd, 2018 04:55 am (UTC)
Here you go!

Survivor "Summer Nights"

Girl it always seems about September
That's the time, again I remember the lights
And all the fun of those summer nights
Young and innocent and livin fast
Didn't know enough to know
That a summer love can't last
Can't last

Good luck!!
