More Pool Party!

Well hello there!

Are you going strong with your pool party assignments? Do you still need some inspiration?

Well take a look at what your friends have listed for fandoms for you to consider at these posts and think about a trope. That’s right, think about taking a dip in a trope pool. The water is very refreshing!

I stole a list of tropes from a sight and completely forgot to note where I got it to credit them (so if you recognize it I will happily credit). The trope to swim in today is Road Trip. So put on your trope-ical swimsuit and dive in!

I'm going strong, all right, ventured far enough out of the comfort zone that I am actually writing about a novel that doesn't even entirely have its fandom (not been out very long) - but someone's prompt in a ficathon made me really think of it and inspired me to work with it.

Now you have my nerdy bookish side interested... what novel?

And congrats - it's not easy to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

The Fandom, by Anna Day.

Basically the idea is that this group of friends are attending a Comic Con and find themselves pulled into the universe of their favourite novel, The Gallows Dance (think The Hunger Games inspired, with the Capitol inhabitants as Genetically Modified Humans - Gems - and the districts population as Imperfects - Imps). After inadvertently causing the death of the protagonist, they are then forced to make the canon play out in order to get back home.

It's eventually revealed that the villain, President Stoneback (think President Snow) had pulled them all into the universe with the idea of getting one of the group to write a sequel to the book where the Gems are victorious (he'd attempted it with the original author of the book, only to lead her to leap to her death to escape from his voice in her head).

A prompt in a ficathon made me think of the way Stoneback got in the author's head, and it inspired me to write something which basically sets the scene for a sequel. I'm currently stuck between two possible cliffhanger endings.

I've seen that book floating around a lot lately and now I'm intrigued! Thank you for helping me add to my ever-growing TBR. And thank you for such an excellent explanation. Good luck if you decide to write it!

I have 890 words of it all ready to finish off before the end of the month so I can submit it for the challenge!

I would definitely recommend it. I could even sort of relate to some of what Stoneback was asking - if The Gallows Dance were a real fandom, I would probably be the person fleshing out the Gems. Back in the Lost fandom days, Ben Linus would probably have been recruiting me as I used to write The Others a lot.

Wonderful! Good luck finishing it.

I added it to my Goodreads list yesterday. :)
