okay...I've killed a lot of prompts with one piece (and have created a 'rare pair' in the process...although the 'pair' comes in after this bit. Someday it'll all be posted to AO3...if my co-authors ever catch up. I think. Used the first quote here. It won't let me paste the whole thing, so I'll use relevant bits only.

They did not seem to move anywhere. No steps were taken, there was no movement of air or any gradual shift that suggested movement. There was only the tightening of David’s hand around hers, and hers in his…the natural blinking the eyes are prone to thousands of times per day and then they were nowhere.

Not nowhere precisely, but it looked close enough to nowhere to be momentarily disconcerting. They stood at the side of an endless stretch of road, the pavement dry and cracked, the lines faded from what she imagined must be scorching desert heat as around them the landscape spread out until the vast darkness of sand and scrub merged with the blackness of a midnight sky. For a moment she thought there had been stars, but when she tilted her head upwards she could see only black.

The stars had gone out, disappearing from sight.

Peter growled, his ears flattened against his skull at the unexpectedness of it all.

“They might be watching,” David muttered, looking this way and that as if searching for something. Direction, perhaps, or the presence of the others. “He’s going to come looking…”
