A sort of homecoming
With my parents trailing behind me, I walked into the house for the first time in three years. Hanging from the mantel was a brightly-colored sign that read, “Welcome Home, Billy!” I breathed in, letting the comforting familiar smells of home fill my senses.

Mom brushed past me, saying, “Make yourself at- make yourself comfortable. I’m going to start dinner.”

“Is it okay if I have a shower?” I asked. I didn’t know what the place in Somerset would be like, but the allure of hot water called to me.

“That’s fine. Grab yourself a towel from the linen closet,” Mom said.

On the way to the bathroom, I found myself looking into my old bedroom. Things were mostly as I left them, but there were new sheets on the bed.

The water cascading over me was as wonderful as I remembered. It was quiet too, so unlike what I’d been accustomed to in the past few years.

I walked back downstairs. The smell of fried chicken hung heavily in the air and made my mouth water.

As I glanced around the living room, I noticed the mantel. The sign that had hung there half an hour ago was gone.
