I recommend two of Raymond Chandler's classic Marlowe books:

The Big Sleep

Farewell, My Lovely

True noir and wonderfully hardboiled :)

Thank you so much! I only started reading mysteries about 15 years ago and have stuck with mostly contemporary authors. Although, I do love Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone novels because Kinsey is stuck in the 80's. Makes it fun to see her intuit things out rather than pull out her computer, you know?

You might also enjoy Ngaio Marsh's novels because her detective Inspector Alleyn was wonderfully posh but also funny and the stories span about 50 years and my favorite part of the novels are that many of them are set in the theater--rather cool.
