NaNoWriMo 2019: Day 1--Where to Begin?

Day 1 Word Count Target: 1667

Fridays posts will typically contain a writing-related quote, musical inspiration, and anything else I think might be helpful to add in. Since this is both Day 1 and a Friday...we're here with a double whammy.

01 quote 1.jpg

This YouTube Channel features a variety of sets of a 'coffeehouse' variety, some culturally tuned, some jazzy...take your pick. Great background music for those who like to write in a cafe setting without needing to leave your home ;) Here's an example:

Since we're jumping in at the beginning, as we prepare to tackle those first words on the page, today's topic is Starting Point. Whether you're a writer who likes to jump into the action with your first sentence or begin with a dream sequence, we all look for just the right way to begin. I know some dislike stories that begin with a dream or a prologue, while others love them. I don't think there's any 'wrong' way to long as the goal of hooking your audience is met. Do you agree?

How do you like to begin? What do you find most difficult to do? Do you prefer 1st Person narrative, 3rd Person, or something else?

Word Wars This Weekend

I'm the type of NaNo writer who likes to get a lot of words in the bank in the first few days so on those days when nothing is flowing, I can relax a bit. That said, I'm opening up to some word wars at various times this weekend.

Tonight, there will be 2 rounds starting at 10pm. All times listed are Central
Round 1 (11/1) - 10pm-10:25pm
Round 2 (11/1) - 10:30pm - 10:55pm

Saturday, I will start 3 rounds beginning at 1:30pm
Round 1 (11/2) 1:30pm-1:55pm
Round 2 (11/2) 2pm - 2:25pm
Round 3 (11/2) 2:35pm - 3pm

Sunday, I will start 3 rounds beginning at 6:30am (taking advantage of that extra hour of sleep)
Round 1 (11/3) 6:30-6:55am
Round 2 (11/3) 7am-7:25am
Round 3 (11/3) 7:30am-7:55am

(I might be persuaded to do some evening writing on Sunday evening (around 7) as well. If you need something around that time, let me know.)

I'll run everything from this post so be sure to mark it somehow so you can get back to it.

Hope to see you at one of the sessions! Happy writing!

Weekend Challenge: Horror/Sci-Fi movie taglines

Hey everyone, it's my turn to host this weekend's challenge! As we've just had Halloween, I figured maybe some horror/sci-fi taglines would make for good prompts.

Tell me how many you'd like, and I'll come back in about 8 hours or so (it's my bedtime now!) to hand out the prompts.

You don't have to write anything spooky unless you want to, or even use the whole prompt - if a part of it inspires you to words then so be it! Just write at least 200 words or make a couple of icons (or one banner etc) by midnight Thursday in your timezone, and I'll reward you with words in a WIP or an icon or two!
