Monthly Madness: Original Fic

Hey, guess what?  It’s that time of month again.  No, not Pumpkin Spice Latte time – original fic time, less tasty but just as spicy.  How has the original work been coming this week?  Still flying along or have we gotten derailed somewhere during the month?  I’ll be honest – I’ve been having a bit of both this month.  In one ‘fandom’, I’m writing like crazy, but in the other?  I’m stuck.  I know where I want to go (I think) but I have no idea how I’m going to get there.

Which brings me to today’s topic.  What do you do when you’re stuck and/or blocked with your original fiction?  The reason I’m asking this is because, when you’re writing fanfic, you can go back and re-watch (or read, for book fandoms) the source material.  See how the characters acted, reacted, and did what they did best.  But when you’re writing original work, you don’t have that backlog of source material to fall back on.  So, what do you do?

Some of the things I’ve found that help me are:

- re-reading some of my older fics, especially those from the very beginning.  It often gives me insight into how far the characters have come since I first began toying writing with them.

- building a playlist of songs that remind me of either the characters or the plot I’m working on.

- reading something else.  This sounds counter-productive (especially when you read like I do), but sometimes when I’m fighting with a case-centered fic, a good James Patterson novel can help kick out the kinks by showing me how a real mystery writer does things.

So, what about you guys?  What little tricks do you have that seem to always help you out?  Also, if there’s something else that’s burning a hole in your brain, speak up.  We’d love to hear whatever you’re succeeding/struggling with.

Awesome Monday

Hola peeps!

It's Monday once again, which means time to brag about how awesome you plan to be this week.

It's also the last Monday for the month, which means time for everyone to update their numbers before Saturday. Let's give our wonderful leaders something to really squee about.

We got this month in the bag, so let's get on with the bragging.

I've got another chapter to finish for a current wip I've started posting. I also need to finish up another Tony/Tasha story, so I better post this and get writing.

Outrageous October!

Comment here and I'll put you on the list! It's as simple as stepping up when your name is called and doing your utmost to meet your own daily word count (whatever that may be). When you finish, write a small bragging post and call up the next contestant!

Be accountable for one day!

So I have really loved the way September has been going with assigned dates. What are your thoughts on this? Comment here and we'll go with majority rules!

Big Buddy October!

Over the top October!

Comment here with the count you can reach in the month of October (remember to factor in holidays, finals, road trips, pajama days, hangovers, etc). I will check in with you every 6(ish) days to make sure you are on schedule, to push you if you aren't, and to shake pompoms at you if you are (Well, I'll probably shake pompoms at you either way).

Your count is up to you. There is no minimum beyond what you decide. But Big Buddy will be watching you! If you pledge 100 words/images, then every 6 days chime in to tell us that you've produced 20% of them.

This is not words to be done in lieu of something else. If you have a bingo, or a big bang, or a drabble-a-day, it all counts! Words/images do not have to be posted to count, they just have to be done!
