So, the other day I was accused of being mean to one of my characters and, while he wasn’t exactly enjoying himself, it was a situation he’d put himself into (by falling for someone he couldn’t have). In response, I laughed and said something along the lines of ‘you know what they say – we love to torture our favorites!’ And that (plus this month’s The Darker Side post) made me think. How much do I really mistreat my favorite characters?
Ali’s been through a lot, but then, she’s been with me since I was a kid, so it stands to reason she’d be used and abused by this point.
When I think about my more recent characters, I realize that I seem to have a type and that particular type – the stoic, quiet type – are the ones I seem to put through the most trauma. Wes, Andrej, and Ethan in particular. James seems to be sneaking into this group, but I don’t think he’ll really cross over into the tortured bunch either. He’s not exactly one to sit by and let things happen to him either.
I don’t know why I mistreat this group more than the others, but it always seems to be Andy with the broken heart or Ethan struggling with some unknown he’s unable to burden anyone else with. I do often wonder if it’s because it’s more fun to explore how these seemingly strong and put-together characters handle things. I mean, Zayne would hit the tequila and Travis would down a pound of Twizzlers and go skinny dipping. But what would their partners do? Ask for help? Go it alone and hide the hurt they’re feeling? In their predictability, they become highly unpredictable and I think that’s where my attraction lies.
So, do you torture your favorite babies or do you put them all through the wringer at some time or other? Is there one character you like to beat on more than another? Any idea why that one poor OC gets the brunt of it?
Post a bit of your best hurting if you’d like. You can find a recent example of my wicked ways here
