Request for help

I've just received my assignment for a fic exchange and my requestor has expressed a preference for [character a/character b/character c] as a long term arrangement. Anyone have any suggestions for prompts or tips for a first timer? Shooting for a teen/PG rating so basically any tips/insights on writing a believable relationship would be appreciated. They also listed [character a/character b] so I do have a safety net, but in the spirit of this month's pool party challenge...

Happy to take this offline to emails or pm's if that is preferred.

IF you have a pinterest account do a search for OT3 - There are tons of prompts. If you don't I'm happy to search for you a little later.

I don't have a Pinterest account so a few prompts would be awesome.

Thank you!

I have been writing this kind of relationship for close to a year now so if you can think of anything specific, ask away (PM is great, too). It's still early here (just after 6 AM) so coming up with any general suggestions is beyond me at the moment. Hah.

One thing I can say is this: anything that happens - good, bad, or indifferent - is immediately quadrupled (at least) in complexity because of that third person. Even when they try and stay out of whatever is going on between A & B, C is always dragged in somehow.

To add to Kaige's suggestion, if you're on Tumblr, there's also the Imagine your OTP blog (which has OT3+ prompts as well).

Thank you! I'm sure I'll have specifics once I decide on a premise. I'll check that Tumblr page too.

On the plus side the fandom is in the sci-fi genre -- considering one of the 3 has been dead in canon for years ... lol

You're very welcome! Feel free to PM anytime, I'm chained to a desk from 7:30 AM until 4:00 PM PST, so I'm always around. Hah.

Hah - oh, now that'll make it fun. Good luck!

I'm not very experienced at writing OT3s (I wrote one in once as a side ship to my main pairing), but I have read some fics like that. One thing that makes those relationships more believable for me is seeing the unique dyad dynamics (a/b, b/c, and a/c) as well as everyone together as a group (especially if the fic is longer). When I wrote my fic, I wanted to convey the new relationship nonverbally, so I placed everyone on the couch so that they could cuddle and emphasized how physical affection was going on between all of the dyads at the same time. (I looked at OT3 fanart for inspiration). I also had a character in the OT3 look at both of the other people in the ship when another character referred to people making out with each other on New Year's Eve.

If I were you, I might look at stuff in the Leverage fandom or talk to people who are in that fandom. I know that the OT3 of Eliot/Parker/Hardison is a really popular ship in that fandom. I would also check out the triad verse tumblr. The triad verse is a cross-fandom universe where triad relationships, rather than couples, are normalized in the majority of human cultures. It has a bunch of OT3 fanart and fic.

Thank you for the tips - I will definitely look into leverage and the triad tumblr.

My best guess is the fic will be between 1000 and 3000 words depending on the premise/plot chosen. We only have about a month and that includes getting it to a beta.

I've written and co-written OT3 relationships and they can be tricky, especially if one character wants to dominate the story. (warily eyes a certain redhead) If you need a sounding board, just let me know.

For inspiration, I reccommend checking out this community, polybigbang. Some really.good stories can be found there.

Thank you! I might ask a few of you more experienced OT3 writers if the characters are believable once I have a few more things locked down :)
