And So It Begins (Prying Eyes Original Fiction) - 476 words - Rated PG
The pat of butter swirled slowly around the pan as it melted. Two eggs landed in the melted butter followed by a sigh. Eating breakfast alone sucked, especially when you did it as often as he did.

“At least I can cook,” Adrien muttered while the whites of his eggs bubbled and cooked.

He sprinkled a pinch of salt and a couple grinds of pepper over his eggs. Turning down the heat, he dropped two slices of wheat bread – his mama’s homemade bread – into the toaster. Unbidden, thoughts of his mysterious dinner guest from the night before flooded his brain.

Adrien had been dining by himself, as was his solitary habit, when his friend Bella came up to his table. They’d known each other since high school and it was a happy accident that she managed his favorite restaurant. If nothing else, he could eat good food and see a friendly face anytime he went inside. But that night, she’d had an odd request for him, one he almost regretted accepting.

Bella had batted her pretty eyelashes and begged him to share his table with a lonely cop who’d been waiting nearly twenty minutes for a table. She’d reminded him that he spent too much time on his own and that a little company would be good for his soul. Despite the fact she was right, Adrien found himself reluctant to say yes. But give in he did.

And now, here he stood, alone in his kitchen frying eggs and toasting bread.

“God, I hate this life,” he barked at the walls. The walls remained silent. Because of course they did.

Dropping the toast onto his plate, he slathered it with some of his mother’s blackberry jam. What he’d do without his mother’s care packages, he wasn’t sure. But at least he was well stocked in bread and jam and pasta sauce. He slid the eggs onto the plate next to his toast and frowned at the pathetic mess his life was. Last year, he was voted Sexiest Man of the Year and here he was, eating eggs and toast and he didn’t even have a cat for company. Yeah, hot mess didn’t even begin to cover the disaster his life was.

“Screw it,” he grouched, dropping onto the living room sofa. “Happiness is overrated.”

Or, at least that’s what he tried to make himself believe.

A pair of pale blue eyes flitted across his consciousness and he shoved them aside. No. He couldn’t dwell on how pretty Detective Deacon had been last night. Hell, he couldn’t even flirt with the idea of accidentally running into him again because he had no idea where the handsome cop frequented when he wasn’t working. All he could do was eat his eggs and deal with it.

Oh, and maybe drop by the shelter and get himself a cat.
