NaNoWriMo and Mini_WriMo checkin

We're closing in on the end of week two or about the halfway point. For those doing NaNo, aim to be over 25K by end of Tuesday. mini_wrimos you should aim for 1500 or half of your goal.

I'm approaching 22K and a little worried that my story will wrap up a little too soon. Of course, it's equally likely that I have too much - it is one of the reasons I struggle with week 2.

Here are a few tips to help you out if you're plot is coming up a little short on words -

1. Go back and flesh out a few scenes that maybe you rushed through earlier.
2. Take a prompt from a 1_million_words weekend challenge and fit it in as a twist or extra few pages into your novel. You'd be surprised at how effective this can be.
3. Don't be afraid to be bold. It may seem strange that your tough as nails detective has a sudden obsession with the ballet, but go with it. It can be a dream/nightmare, book or movie the character's read/watched - an interest of someone they've just met.

If you think your novel is running too long - there are a few tips here as well -

1. Leave a placeholder for a scenes you're not sure you need. For example, is the third flashback really needed for the story? Do I need a dinner scene or is it bogging down the action?
2. Consider that you have enough material for a two or more book series and figure out the logical end for the current novel. Maybe even write that ending and then go back to the middle later.

Okay folks - your turn. Chime in with successes/struggles/tips :D

And write those words!!!

pushed through serious draggies today to put in 5966 words...enough to finish chapter 6 and break 50k (by 481 words)
Nov. 13th, 2016 10:25 pm (UTC)
Yikes, can't even imagine writing 50K in 13 days. You rock!

The muses were good to me this year...and I don't have a life outside of work lol.

Congrats!!!! So is your plot wrapped up or are you going to keep writing on your NaNo project?
Nov. 14th, 2016 01:44 pm (UTC)
Wrapped up? not even close, lmao ;)
I'm probably 1/2 way through...and my main goal is to finish it (even if that takes me into December) There's probably 2 more books in the series, but I know pretty much where this one will end. If the muses are nice, it'll be somewhere around 150k...give or take...but I'll be surprised if I can actually finish that in November.

Yay! Congratulations! :D It amazes me how many words people can get so early in the month!

I'm not always so lucky...muses were just cooperative so far this month (real life too)

I'm just under 27K on Nano right now and I've yet to do any writing today (I just couldn't put off cleaning the apartment any longer!) I've still got a few hours before I need to start getting ready for work, so I'm hoping for another 1K.

As for word count tips: the dream sequence is a good one. On one of my previous nanos I couldn't figure out how to segue into a scene, so I gave the character a scary dream (of the type where the reader isn't quite sure it's a dream until the character wakes up.) It ended up being one of the moments the readers commented on the most, and for me it was completely a throw-away just to make words and get into the meat of the scene!

You rock! 27K is awesome!

I only did about 600 words yesterday - wasn't feeling one hundred percent so I gave myself a break :)

Awww, sorry to hear you were unwell. 600 words is still really good when the body is telling you to rest!

I'll be lucky if I crack 250 words today. I'm not really sure where the time went! Back on track tomorrow.

Sometimes a light day is what I need- kinda like a battery recharge. I managed 1727 today and broke 24K for the month.

You'll get your words tomorrow!!! WE CAN DO THIS

BTW - thanks for the idea of checking LJ for my past NaNo history. Turns out this is my 7th time doing NaNo. Out of 6 previous attempts, 4 were wins and the other 2 I'd made it just past the halfway mark. Much happier to see my lifetime NaNo word count top 275K. I feel like I've gotten some of my cred back :D

Yay for Nano cred! And 4 wins is quite impressive. Soon to be 5!

Congrats on your EXCELLENT day yesterday! Kickin' ass and takin' names!

no NaNo writing, instead started plotting out my SOJ fic (500 words in detailed outline format). I think I've gone through 3 different plot ideas, scrapping them all because I don't have the time to devote to properly flesh out the idea (they've gone to my "maybe another time" folder.
Nov. 14th, 2016 01:15 pm (UTC)
words!! I kinda feel bad about SOJ - I was so wrapped up in work I missed it this year. Probably just as well though as NaNo is monopolizing all my free time this month.

You still have plenty of time to get back to NaNo. You're doing awesome!

As of right this minute I am at 20,569. Way behind where I need to be but I know I can catch up. I mean, I wrote 3500 words on Saturday and it was not difficult at all. I just need to sit down and actually do the writing. :D

You're a little behind, but not by too much. YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
