Fandom Squee Days 4 & 5: First Fandom!

So every weekend this Fandom Squee month, we are going to do something a little different. Instead of giving you a specific fandom, we're going to give a more general theme to open up the squeeing to even more fandoms. So today I present to you:

YOUR FIRST FANDOM!

Everyone has one — that fandom that drew you in. Maybe it's the one that got you started writing fic or creating graphics. Or maybe you just secretly had your first ship and spent hours thinking about them.

For me, my first fandom was on for only 12 episodes back in 1991: Dark Shadows. I had never seen the original (I've seen an episode here and there since then) and I didn't know the story, but I fell in love with this show. I had no idea what shipping was back then, but I shipped Barnabus and Victoria so damn hard. And when it ended on a cliffhanger, never to return to TV, I spent a lot of hours dreaming of what would have happened. I didn't actually write fic back then, but if I had, I probably would have written novels.

Ughhh this show. Forever going to hold a piece of my heart.

So, now it's your turn. Tell me about your first fandom!

So in really hard shipping and writing etc. it is Les Miserables. Ever since I watched the 25th anniversary in about 2012, I couldn't stop writing/reading fanfics and it still holds a firm place in my heart.
In terms of loving the fandom and obsessive watching, Doctor Who! Nine years old at the restart and I had never been obsessed with something like that before!

Oh, gosh..... my first fandom that I adored in any sort of a fannish way was Star Trek, TOS. I didn't write fic for it. I didn't know anyone *did* write fic for established franchises back then because...well, I was an actual kid. But as I became a teen and it hit the 'rerun' circuit (thank GOD for WPIX-TV) I deepened my commitment to it by recording epis and lining them up on a shelf in stardate order. Yep. Geek. I adored Kirk's investment in the federation's goals. I crushed on Checkov. I wanted to be Mr. Spock's bestie, and for Dr. McCoy to grumble about my attitude. And I wanted Uhura's job.

Then the Trek movies came along. Like most others, I was hugely excited for the first film and then a bit let down by it. The colors were all so soft and pastel after the tacky brilliance of the show. But we were thrilled to have it, and could see how it would lead to more Trek.

I always shipped the friendship between Spock and Kirk, but would hate to admit how many years (decades) it was before I saw the slash. But hey, better late than never. ;).

The first fandom I participated in with fic was LOST. I started writing because I missed it and missed the character voices so much. Without it, I wouldn't be here tonight, and wouldn't have written exactly 200 other fandom fics since. :)

I barely recall Star Trek from when it was first on...and where we lived, I didn't get reruns...but I picked up a book when I was in jr. high/high school where Spock and Kirk were in love with the same woman...I read it cause what I remembered of Spock from my tiny years didn't allow for him to be in love...
By the time I finished reading it, I knew I could write like that...and so I dug in and wrote 2 seperate fics. I still have them somewhere, and keep meaning to rewrite them now that I know what I'm doing as a writer lol.

You should pick them up and give them a read, at least- if only to appreciate the journey. I'm reworking a story of mine that's long and only a few years old, but.... it's work! I can't believe how much my writing changed in @ five years.

The last time I came across them, reread them, i was 'appalled' lol. Continuity issues...leaps from one point to the other like "oh, the reader will know what I mean without me saying it"...
The basic plots and premise were good (are good) but the writing itself SO needs an overhaul. And as I was a teenager...there's so much Mary Sue to the writing its pathetic, lmao.
I should rework them though. I think they deserve that much lol.

God I loved the Dark Shadows remake!

The first fandom I started writing in was Star Trek (the original). Spock was/is so my spirit animal.

But the very first fandom I can recall being caught up in (which will really show my age lol) was the Planet of the Apes TV show. I had toys, the lunch box...and was so stuck on the chimp Galen (what can I say...Roddy McDowall's voice just does things to me lol. I hadn't started writing seriously at that point, and I don't recal 'shipping' any characters with anyone else...but I was more than a little infatuated.

Oh! I loved the Planet of the Apes show too. I had loved (and still do) the original movies so the series was a natural step. I also loved Galen (and Roddy) but in my heart of hearts I was shipping the two lead guys - one dark, one fair - although I didn't realise the specifics that well!

Yes, I love the films too...and the new ones (I have a thing for Andy Serkis too ;)
I can certainly see shipping the guys (their names will come back to me in the middle of the day I'm sure lol)

Now I don't feel so ancient that someone actually remembers the show with me. People seem to recall the movies fine, but not the show for some reason (though I guess it didn't last very long)

Star Trek Voyager was my first fandom ever. I had favorite shows before this (namely X-Files and seaQuest) before this but Voyager was how I discovered fandom and fanfic and attempted to write fic on my own.

stumbling across fandom on the baby Internet (1996, y'all) reeled me in and the rest is history XD

Hmm - If we're talking the first fandom I started reading fanfics, watching fanvids etc, it would be the X-Files. One of my favorite fanvids was all the yummy X-File male characters set to Geri Halliwell's It's Raining Men. Oh gosh - now I'm admitting how old I am, but I remember when the Internet was just a baby and fans had to get their fix from fansites hosted in places like GeoCities and posted their theories/thoughts on episodes to forums like those on delphi or gosh forbid AOL.

The first fandom I started creating stuff for was Star Trek: The Next Generation. I started with fanvids (Picard/Crusher) and met lots of wonderful people here on LJ. I was obsessed with Picard/Crusher. After fanvids, I moved onto icons and larger graphics. Oddly, I've not written much TNG fanfic, but I love all the Treks and always look forward to August rush or gift exchanges where I can catch up with old favorites.

I loved Dark Shadows! I remember when the Scifi channel used to show the original 1960's episodes and they were fabulous--very spooky and atmospheric--as were their tie in movies.

I know there's been a bunch on DS remakes but I only saw the 1990's version which was awesome. It always made sense to me to have the actress who played Victoria Winters to also play Josette in the 1700's flashback episodes--plus Ben Cross was wonderfully dishy as Barnabas:)

I think there was another TV show in the early 2000's but I never saw it and of course there was the Tim Burton film which was rather cool.

Very first fandom was LotR. Not the first thing I compulsively watched, or got fangirly about. But it was the first thing after I discovered the internet and found out there were other people as crazed as I was.

LotR squeeing found me real-person fic, and I never really caught the bug for it with the characters, just the actors. And then I stumbled across slash and... AND HERE I AM!!! There were just so many pretty men in that world.

And I'm looking at the graphic here and squeeing over a tiny little JGL, and NOW I want to watch this! Thank you!

I loved both the original Dark Shadows and the remake! I stumbled across the original back in the early days of SciFi, I think it was. My stepfather caught me watching it and showed me that our local Hollywood Video had the entire series to rent on VHS (yeah, I'm old).

My first fandom though was probably MASH. The show first aired the year before I was born (see above) and was on television every single night of my childhood. I still love the show, even though I've seen every episode more times than I can count. I never wrote fic or shipped anyone or anything like that, but it was MY LIFE for most of elementary school. Hah.

My first fandom would probably have to be The Six Million Dollar Man (yes, I am that old to have seen it first time around as a kid) but I didnt follow fandom as such as we were way behind in NZ and there was only discussing last night's show with your mates at school the next day! Starsky & Hutch was even biger though because even more friends were into it! I didnt know anything about fanfic back then but I shipped those two so hard that I'd relive any H/C scenes from the show in my head and imagine them being together forever!

My first online foray into fandom happened very late in life with LOST, though, and then I went slightly sideways into a RPG where actor/characters from a few places but mainly LOTR were represented in a fantastic story called Eagle's Nest, and that led me to writing proper LOST fanfic... and the rest is history! Now I have a bunch of fandoms that I write in, and good friends here to discuss and write wonderful things with!
