Beta List!

Sorry I've been slow to get this together, but here is the list of members who are willing to beta fic:

All of the above beta readers have commented to this post with what they're happy to help with in terms of fandom, read-thru for basic errors, grammar/spelling/punctuation, characterisation, plot, etc.

Anyone looking for a beta can refer to this list and PM any of the above betas if they need some help with something.

It's okay for a beta to say no if they're busy or feel unable to help someone. For those of you here looking for beta help, you can always try someone else on the list if someone's unable to help you.

And remember, a beta is trying to help make a story better; they're not criticising the writer. Every suggestion to alter the story in any way is simply a SUGGESTION and the writer can accept or disregard that suggestion as they see fit. If you can't take concrit, be sure to tell the beta exactly what it is you want from their help before you get started.

Thanks, guys, and let's get some beta-reading done!

I figured I do this with bullet-y points :)

Beta Style:
- I prefer to preserve the writer's individual style and their story as much as possible. If it's not how I would write something, that's not the point, but if I think something is way off character and there's no justification (eg. not an AU scenario, and nothing in the fic to reason it away) I'll probably point it out.

- I'm very happy to brainstorm ideas, but I'm not too good at hand holding throughout a project mostly because of the previous point - I like the writer to tell their tale and not be influenced by my singular preferences. But if you want that kind of input we can have a 'chat' beforehand.

- Let me know what you want me to do upfront, be it a check of plot inconsistencies, spelling/grammar/legibility and/or a full concrit of the story as a whole. I'm happy to do it all, although sometimes it might depend on how familiar I am with the material. Also let me know what language you want to stick with, whether I'm looking to 'localise' terminology/spelling to the source, or if you prefer to stick to your own native prose.

- I have been told I have a pretty good attention to detail. I tend to be able spot inconsistencies, or sp/gr issues, or at least I hope I do :)

Fandoms I know (hopefully quite well):
Hawaii Five-0, Lost, Magnificent Seven (TV), Professionals, Stargate SG1, Star Trek (TOS and AOS), X-Files. There are also quite a few movie fandoms I write in, and there are a few shows and movies I read fic for even if I don't write it, so feel free to ask.

Things you should know:
- I'm English and based in the UK, so if anything needs Brit-picking that's no problem.

- I do mostly write in US fandoms, so I'm not too bad with US-picking, but obviously I'm not native, no matter how many trips out there I make :)

- My turnaround time is normally within a week (at most, but of course is length and depth of beta duties dependent), but I do seem to occasionally have really hectic weeks with no free time so check with me first if you have a tight deadline.

- I am happy to beta fandoms I don't know/original fic, but if I don't know the show/characters etc I will let you know beforehand so you can decide if you're happy with just a technical beta.

- I don't have that many turn offs when it comes to themes I won't read/beta, but I'd appreciate a heads up for any of the standard warnings that fic archives go with, such as death fics, rape, incest etc. Depending on my relationship with the fandom/characters I may turn something down in one fandom that I'd do in one I wasn't as invested in :)

- Technical areas of expertise are about as random as you can get, but I do have backgrounds in geology and paleontology if anyone suddenly feels the urge to write natural disaster fic or Dinosaurs Ate Manhattan. I also have worked for the UK Police, so if you're worried about accuracy in a police setting then I should be able to cover a fair bit there.

- I respect of anything above, if your Google-fu fails and Wikipedia isn't helping, or you just want to contact me to ask a question about what the UK term for biscuits is, just PM me and I'll do what I can :)

Fandom: H50 is pretty much the only fandom I'm super active in.
I can help with: SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), Americanisms, characterization, plot...and really anything the writer might be having a problem with.

depending on the fic length, I have a 1-3 day turn around.

eta From October 25, 2013 to December 20, 2013 I will be unavailable to beta. If you asked me before, we're still okay and I've set aside time to beta your writing.

I'm glad to do read-throughs for grammar and punctuation on stories from any fandom.

I'm well-versed in Trek and LOST characterization and I think I'm pretty strong now on H50, though the finer points of canon history I'm still working my way back through for super fine detail.

Just let me know if you purely want a piece checked through for typos, etc... or if you'd like to hear if anything jumped out as maybe needing more massaging or general attention. The more specific you can be about what you'd like from a beta read, the better, glad to help.

Fandoms I'm familiar with: H-50, Stargate SG1, Stargate SGA, The Mentalist, Due South, Torchwood, Robin Hood BBC, Merlin (BBC).

Beta Duties: General read throughs, picking up on any errors, punctuation, grammar and that sort of thing.

Basically just tell me what you're wanting out of me looking over the fic. If it's just a general fresh eyes to make sure spellings are correct and the flow is good OR you're doing a complete overhaul and want some advice on what to keep, what to ditch.

I tend to see what the author is after and go with that - I'm all for supporting how you, as the author, wants your work to be presented. Unless it's a major plot or character flaw that is completely out of sync with the show in which case I'll politely point it out to you.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like a beta, my turn around is about 2 - 4 days (depending on, you know, life).

Also I'm happy to help brainstorm, cheerlead or be a sounding board if you have a plot idea you want to mash out.

Fandoms: all the CSIs, NCIS, X-files, Trek, the Avengers, H-5O, and a few other so don't be afraid to ask.

I'm good with spelling, grammar, and catching elusive typos.

If you need anything else, just ask I don't bite (well, not too hard).

My turnaround time can be from 1 to 5 days depending on RL and writing projects.

I'm happy to do a simple beta for spelling, grammar, punctuation, typos on any fic at all.

I can go into more depth on fics for shows/movies I've seen or am involved in more deeply (list here), although my memory isn't the best insofar as fact-checking goes!

My main strength is characterisation, and I'm happy to look for plot-holes or any oddities in speech or phrases, especially for non-English -speaking writers. My Americanisms are sometimes off, but I'm not too bad with Britishisms, and I know my NZ/Australian coloquialisms pretty well since I'm a Kiwi. ;-)

Turnaround can be anywhere between 1-7 days, depending on my schedule and how soon you need it, so some idea of that would be useful when requesting the beta.

Just ask regarding anything else; I'm open to helping where needed!

I'm very happy to help anyone who wants input on a written fic for spelling and grammar - I copywrite/edit for a living so I'll pick up as many errors as possible. I'm British, and working on improving my American English!

From a fandom POV, H5O is my main thing currently, but I have a good knowledge of the Buffy-verse, and will also beta on NCIS/NCIS LA, Leverage, Sherlock, Elementary, Bones...but if you're simply after spelling and grammar I'll read anything.

My turnaround will be 1 -7 days depending on length of your fic and my commitments.

I'd be happy to help if someone needs me. Turn around will depend on life at the moment.
