Off topic sad face

Sir Terry Pratchett died today, at home with his family and cat. He was one of my favorite authors and I admired the way he faced his Alzheimer's diagnosis without letting go of his humor and style.

That is horribly sad. I've never read him, but I know many who have loved his books. And Alzheimer's sucks, no way around it. *hugs*

The Discworld series was very funny and silly, but could also slip in some moderately deep thoughts under the radar. My favorite (aside from basically the entirety of Small Gods) was the Samuel Vimes 'boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness. http://www.goodreads.com/quotes/72745-the-reason-that-the-rich-were-so-rich-vimes-reasoned

I have Going Postal on my bookshelf that someone gave me (and that I do hope to eventually read). :)

It's amazing when an author can do something like that and make it seem effortless. I love that quote though, because it's so accurate.

And I love the kitty in your icon. :D

Oh no! He will be missed in our corner of the world too. I'm a fan and so are my hubby and bro-in-law. I remember going into town (Auckland city) to wait in line for his autograph which I got for my bro-in-law (tho' I liked him too, I didn't feel I should ask for 2 autographs) and he was very gracious, and happily signed books for so many people that day (some years ago now, of course).

RIP Terry; your books held so much pleasure and amusement for so many of us, and yes, as you say, Kahuna, there was a lot of thought behind so much of it (he and Douglas Adams had a lot in common this way).
