Weekend Challenge reward: WIP extract

Hey everyone! I ran the weekend challenge the weekend before last with heatwave prompts, and have now finished all the rewards! Woot - go me, it only took a week and a bit. That must be a world record for me. ;-P

Anyway, I just wanted to share with you guys so that the people who opted for me adding 100 words to one of my WIPs could see that I'd done it! I have a ways to go on this particular fic, but the words I added tonight (half of the 849 words written tonight in your honour and the other half as today's words!) have taken me to over 14K on this particular long H50 one-shot. WOO! I am pleased with myself, because I need to get this fic finished and move on to deal with another WIP to ensure I do something I promised I would do this year: look into more of my own original fic!

Excerpt from Between the Lines:

"Of course it's okay," Kono says as she's seeing Steve off. She's welcomed Brad in with open arms, even though Steve hasn't told her exactly what's happened.

He's just said that Brad and Cath are cousins and that they've had a falling out; that he feels he can't be considered neutral in this since Cath's none too happy with him either for 'being on Brad's side'. It's not exactly a lie, while not precisely being the truth, but is enough for Kono it seems. She hasn't pushed for details of the disagreement, and she seems to have taken to Brad instantly, which helps.

Brad's getting settled into Kono's spare room while she walks Steve back to his truck. "I'm only surprised you asked me and not Danny, or are you concerned that he won't be comfortable alone with Brad in his house?"

Steve frowns at her out the window of the truck as he pushes the key into the ignition. "What do you mean?"

"You really need to ask?" she says, curving a sympathetic brow.

"You mean… because he's…" Steve's finding it difficult to talk suddenly.

"Yeah," Kono replies softly, "or is that the reason you don't want him staying with you?"

His heart thumps erratically. How much has she guessed? "Look, it's… it's not what you're thinking, Kono. I can't go into it right now, but… I need some space, and so does Brad. I'll go and see Cath tomorrow and try to sort this mess out, but… in the meantime-"

"Don't worry, Steve. I'm not going to say anything out of place. If Brad wants to talk, I'll listen, but if not… well, I know you'll do what's right."

Steve just looks at her for a second, his heart still playing the bongos. He has no idea if her words mean what he's thinking, but he can't even form a sentence right now. He nods his thanks, smiles tightly, and starts the car. She backs away as he reverses, a thoughtful look on her face. If she hasn't worked it out, he's pretty sure she will soon enough – whether Brad tells her everything or not; she's just that intuitive.

Meanwhile, Steve tried not to think about how awkward his parting with Brad was and how guilty he feels about this whole situation. He needs to do something to relieve the tension, and almost wishes Five-0 had a case to deal with – except that he wants Brad to have Kono for company at the moment – to give him something else to think about.

(425 words, 100 each for kahuna_burger, thtwzjustadream, mierke and agdhani. Sorry I couldn't make the Hobbit prompt work for something short, agdhani, but you did say adding words to a WIP would be good too!).

I also wrote the following double-drabbles/ficlets and an icon for the other weekend challengers who managed a creation that weekend:

1. Ingenuity - Team, PG, 522 words (Firefly) for guineamania

2. Beautiful - Chekov/Sulu, PG-13, 250 words (Star Trek: AOS) for elasticella (also a fill for my Vacation#5 Bingo card for February)

3. Heatwave - Steve/Danny, PG, 200 words (Hawaii 5-0) for heffermonkey

4. Regrets - Bill/Sam, PG-13, 200 words (True Blood) for angelus2hot

5. McCoy icon - Dr. Leonard McCoy, PG, 1 icon (Star Trek: AOS) for peppermint_wow

and with that, I feel very inspired to keep working on the same WIP for the rest of this week, as well as trying to get some more Bingo prompts filled before the month is out!

And on that subject, how are all you Bingo players doing? I was very impressed with the number of you that signed up and just know that February's count is going to be FANTASTIC! You guys are all amazing; thank you for playing! ;-) It's not too late to sign up for Bingo by the way - there are still a bunch of cards there that haven't been chosen (although double-ups are fine too!). Go here to choose one!

Yay for all those words, well done you!

1) I am very intrigued by this WIP excerpt, I want to read more! Hope you get it wrapped up soon x

2) I love my fic which I've already told you, but it's worth saying again, because it's awesome!

3) as for Bingo, I've wrapped up a fic for a three square line on one card and I'm seeking inspiration for some extras on other ones :D

For bingo my 900 words fic for the all squares is rapidly growing at a rate I cannot predict ... 1300 words and only just at the second square ...

The more words, the merrier! YAY! ;-)

Wow! That's a lot of fic, H!! Good for you. :). Glad you had such an awesome turnout for the weekend challenge - and glad I went with the WIP option for you, 'cause that's a ton!

My bingo is going pretty well - I should be finishing up a third square tonight to complete an SPN fic. The prompts just worked quite well for it. Going to aim for a blackout. :)

Thanks! I was very pleased, and yeah, anything I can do to help finish this sucker is good!

YAY for blackouts! I know you can do it! ;-)

I'm almost done with my bingo, can you believe that? :) About 4k words right now with maybe one more chapter to go.

WOOHOO on the Bingo front; you have done fantastically! I'm so pleased for you! (and the comm!) ;-)

I'm really intrigued by that WIP you have going on. You've posted snippets from it before, right? or was that the other one? lol

I'm really hoping I can get through my 4 mini-bingo cards. I have gotten 2 squares done though! and one of the squares was for my 2nd ever Teen Wolf fic and it came in at almost 2000 words! Now I'm trying to see what I can do for my remaining squares.

I'm not sure, in all honesty, if I have posted snippets before - I feel like I've been working on several for so long right now, but this one's the one that's eating my brain, so I'm going with it!

I know you're doing well on the Bingo front and all I can say is WOOHOO! ;-)

Thank you! Steve is one of those classic 'clam' characters - all tough and never showing anything on the outside, but soft and squishy inside, so he's fun to write. I'm thrilled you like it even though you don't watch H50 (Steve is so very very pretty; you should totally watch! It's also a slasher's heaven... in case that helps!)

I'm so pleased you liked the icon - I'm pretty amateurish at making them, but they're so much fun!

Wow, that's a lot of words - congrats (and counting them here is totally wonderful!), and I look forward to hearing how you go with Feb's bingo challenge here! ;-)

I don't know the fandom, but I like that excerpt! Good to hear this weekend challenge helped you continue your WIP :D
